Motion capture – is movement capture process of a real man and/or object for further use of received data in production of character and/or object animation. For motion capture special markers are put on actors, wearing special elastic tight-fit costumes, than special mocap-cameras determine the positions of these markers in space, and mocap-system generates a file with motion data.
Motion capture ideally suits for any types of movements and animation:
Full body motion capture:
• Walking
• Running
• Jumping
• Dancing
• Falling
• Battles
• Acrobatic skits
Face mimics motion capture:
• Talking
• Singing
• Mimics
Motion capture precisely conveys the specifics and dynamics of the whole body movement, e.g.:
after a jump, upon the contact with the surface and after it, when a body of a character is influenced by both gravitation and inertia, except basic movements we can see multitude of secondary and inert movements. Movements of this type are a very complicated or practically unrealizable task, if the animation is made by key frames “manually”.
Also use of mocap-technology in tens reduces the time for animation, e.g.:
in complicated scenes with several characters and their interaction.
Analysis of received mocap-data would be useful for development and improvement of animation skills. You would notice a lot of interesting and new aspects, when observing captured movements of shoulders and neck. In the most cases these movements are poorly seen in general view, but their reproduction with the help of key frames might be an extremely complicated task.
If motion capture is used for animation of games characters, their movements look more realistic and natural.
When models with low details level are observed, their artificiality nature is seen of itself, moreover, if the animation is done by an unprofessional animator, their artificiality and synthetics would be even more obvious. Whereas, when mocap-data is used, animation of character’s models even with low details level looks naturally, and a character - really alive.
Basic optical MOCAP system set: mocap cameras, mocap suits, mocap markers, calibration and other mocap accessories.
